The Woes of the Working Girl

My daughter decided she needed a part time job. I was apprehensive as she already has several responsibilities, but agreed to let my husband talk to a manager friend of his at a local grocery store. He told us to "send her over for an interview."

After the interview, consisting mostly of questions regarding various family members and if my inlaw's pet donkey was feeling okay, she was hired.

(picture of daughter relaxed and happy in those "pre-job" days)

The store is small and the staff are friendly. The employees have became a close knit group. Shortly after my daughter started working there, a group of jerks began to come outside the store and harass the African American workers and follow them home, often trying to run them off the road. The other workers have all gotten involved and began taking their lunch breaks to drive their coworkers home and make sure they get their safely.
This experience caused everyone to bond. Now they get together outside of work for group milk and cookie parties and watch Disney movies together. I'm proud my daughter works at a place where everyone stands up for the rights of others and for their beliefs that everyone should be treated equally.

  2. Good for your daughter! The job and the stance...

We have problems like that here - only in reverse. Either way, it's wrong and it's no fun. *sigh*

I love the idea of milk n cookies n Disney! =D

  3. Oh, Pam! I know I'm a little sheltered, but I did't really think that kind of thing went on now-a-days, except in the movies. Seriously, doesn't the police do anything about it?

Lessons in life for her and me, both.

  5. That is so awesome she decided that she wanted to work part-time. And, the fact that they all got close and stick up for each other. There's too many ignorant people in this world.

  7. Pam, I love your daughter's spirit and confidence and can tell from this post that you are nurturing her yet letting her step out a bit in independence so the Holy Spirit can become her Counselor.

    WOW.

  8. I remember holding down a couple of part-time jobs (at different times) in high school. It was a lot of responsibility. Until you hear about or experience the situations you described, you just don't think about it or realize it does happen.
